Ammonia at Sea: Ask for Evidence Before Paying for Greener Freight

Alternative marine fuels are moving through technical and operational scrutiny. For feed buyers, the immediate task is to distinguish a credible shipment-level offer from a broad environmental claim.

A Current Development, Not a Booking Guarantee

IMO’s Future Fuels and Technology project is holding a technical seminar on ammonia as marine fuel on 17 September 2026. Its announcement was published on 16 September. The programme covers production pathways, bunkering, onboard technology, operational considerations and spill response. Commercial interpretation: For a buyer arranging containers of protein meals or marine ingredients, the useful question is not whether ammonia is attracting attention. It is what a specific freight proposal actually delivers. A technical event does not establish vessel availability, a reliable loading window or a verified emissions reduction for the consignment being purchased.

Start with the Emissions Boundary

IMO’s lifecycle framework distinguishes upstream fuel-production and supply emissions from emissions associated with onboard use. Together, these form the well-to-wake assessment. Its 2024 guidelines cover carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, and recognise that different fuel-production pathways can have different environmental footprints. IMO lifecycle framework.

Commercial interpretation: Ask the forwarder or carrier what its proposed reduction measures. Does the figure cover the ocean leg alone, the complete transport chain or another defined boundary? Request the reference service, calculation method, reporting period and evidence supporting the comparison. Do not compare two percentages until their underlying boundaries and assumptions have been aligned.

Treat the fuel name as the beginning of the enquiry, not its conclusion. Ask how the fuel-production pathway enters the calculation and whether the offered figure is estimated before shipment or reconciled afterwards. Keep that distinction visible when passing information to a customer who may use it in their own reporting.

Define What the Buyer Is Purchasing

Commercial interpretation: A freight offer should explain whether the claimed benefit relates to the vessel carrying the cargo, a defined service network or a separately allocated environmental attribute. Ask the provider to describe the mechanism in plain language and identify the documentation the buyer will receive. Do not assume these arrangements are equivalent.

Where a benefit is allocated separately from physical carriage, request the rules governing allocation, verification and use of the claim. Ask how the provider prevents the same benefit being assigned more than once. Establish whether the buyer may pass the claim to its customer and what wording the evidence supports.

Put these answers beside the commercial quotation. Record the additional charge separately from base freight, handling and other services. An environmental option should have a defined deliverable and an agreed evidence deadline, so that the purchasing team can verify what was bought rather than relying on a general promise.

Keep Operational Readiness in the Review

IMO’s seafarer-transition information lists ammonia-specific interim training guidelines, STCW.7/Circ.27, dated July 2026. Its seminar also explicitly includes operational and safety considerations. Commercial interpretation: Buyers should not attempt to certify ship engineering or crew competence themselves. Instead, ask the contracted logistics provider to confirm the operational basis of the service and identify the responsible party for relevant compliance. Keep those confirmations within the provider’s scope of responsibility rather than replacing them with a buyer-created technical checklist.

Ask what happens if the nominated vessel changes, the routing is revised or the intended fuel arrangement cannot be delivered. Determine whether the environmental claim, premium and supporting documents will change. Agree how exceptions will be reported before presenting the service to a customer as a settled feature of the shipment.

Protect the Ingredient Shipment First

Commercial interpretation: Assess the environmental option alongside the actual ingredient-delivery requirements. Keep packaging, loading arrangements, transit expectations, destination documentation and the agreed condition of the goods explicit. An attractive emissions statement should not obscure an unresolved question about whether the proposed service meets the purchase specification.

For a repeat programme, consider a clearly bounded first shipment with agreed review criteria. Ask operations to assess delivery performance, the technical team to review any product-condition issues, and the relevant reporting owner to examine the environmental evidence. Compare the delivered result with the original offer before extending the arrangement.

Retain one shipment file connecting the quotation, booking, transport documents, invoice and final emissions statement. Record any changes between the quoted and delivered service. If evidence remains outstanding, mark the environmental claim as pending rather than allowing it to become an established fact through repetition in sales correspondence.
